Tessa: For the last month or so I’ve been running around trying to get my girlfriends to enter the Divas Only mini-triathlon. My conscription drive has garnered very little enthusiasm. Those who are very assertive have just come up with a flat out no, others have asked where the wine and cheese comes in, others just ignore me, and then there are others who say they’re not fit enough blah blah blah blah blah. That’s cool. I get it. But none of this has dampened my enthusiasm and I continue to ask anyone I think is remotely likely to do this with me. I have my eye on the reward and that includes a great dinner out with food and wine all fuelled by endorphins. I already feel sky high at the thought. So I was losing hope thinking I would be doing this by myself which is fine. Dave will cheer me on and I’ll be happy with that. But there’s something about doing something like this with others that’s just fun and helps create some kind of bond.
So last weekend I had dinner with my friend Eva and I mention the triathlon thinking that there’s no way in hell she’ll do it because I know she doesn’t like to bike and I also know she has a very real fear of water and swimming. But I send her the link anyways. Two nights ago I got an email from her saying she’s thinking about it but she’s not sure because she doesn’t know how to swim. Fair enough. Later that same night I got a phone call from her saying she’s found a trainer, she’s told him about her fears, when the triathlon is taking place and would he be able to help her. They’ve agreed to work together to get her ready for July 27th. I’m shocked and I feel crazily proud. Now she just has to get a bike and figure that out.
Even if she doesn’t do this I am so crazy proud of her for even coming this far in her head. My other unlikely compadre in the race is my long time good friend Janice. Janice isn’t super crazy about exercising, (although she’s a wicked swimmer) and her knees and hips can give her trouble from time to time….but she’s agreed to do it as well. I’m soooo excited!

Hey Mag,
I’m not sure where you live but you should just google triathlons and check out what’s in your area. The mini (really called sprint distance) had a specific division for kids in different age groups. Sounds to me like you would be more than up for it. The distances for adults are:
750 metres, (10 lengths meaning there and back of a 75 metre pool), 18 kilometre bike ride and a 5 km run. The reflexionic or divas only site has some training suggestions as well. Good luck!
